Transmitting GPS position by an iridium phone

This page describes how to send your position automatically using an Iridium portable phone, a GPS and a Basic Stamp II microcontroller from the company Parallax, Inc. Position is extracted from the NMEA sentences of the GPS by the controller and translated to a PDU formatted SMS. The message is submitted to the iridium phone by using standard AT – commands. The SMS message contains an email address which is gated by the Iridium satellite network to the addressee via internet.
Snow temparture recording by student at UNIS.
The motivation for the project is to keep track of people out in the rather harsh environment of the arctic. If an emergency situation occurs, the exact location is reported automatically to home base. See track party sub meny to the left to view position of units.

A complete description of the system from electronic layout to microcontroller source code is given at this page. It has also been tested by UNIS students during an eight days ski trip in April 2006.
